Part 2 research question # 1 (emily)\

Sierra Leone has a Constitutional Republic. Has a directly elected president Ernest Bai Koroma. The country also has a unicameral legislature (one parliament that includes 124 seats). The government was established under the 1991 constitution. Sierra Leone government has had many negative effects on it people. After the constitution was amended the RUF (Rebel under Force) attacked villages. The APC (all people’s congress) abused their use of power. There were many challenges for the government against poverty. In my opinion this government might not be the best of choice for the fact since 1991 it hasn’t done anything to improve the way its population lives. Poverty is still a major problem.

Ashley Vargas Part 2:Q #1 pt. 1

1. Research two different African nations. Define each government, explain how each government began in nation, how the government has affected the people of the nation (positively or negatively) and whether or not you think that this government is the most appropriate choice for the nation.

The country of Angola is governed under the constitution of 1975. Which was when Portugal gave them their independence. Angola now has a multiparty democracy. The president controls the executive branch. Which is elected for 5-year term. The president is chief of state and head of government. They also have a parliamentary system which the prime minister and council of minister are chosen by the president. They also have a national assembly, which holds 220 seats, and they are votes in for 4-year terms. Another government system they use is a judicial branch with a supreme court. As you can see Angola is controlled by many different government system. At first Angola was under the Marxist rule. Which was when Angola was under the colonial rule of Portugal. They wanted to end their colonial rule and become independent. Their multiparty democracy has affected the people in Angola positively because they have adapted to the way their government is formed and are allowed to vote. They also manage Angola very well under the different governments. I believe that it is the appropiate government because they are adapted to it and if t is changed it would become difficult and people may revolt against the change.

Part One #2 (emily infante)

Is imperialism inevitable? Will /should we ever strive for power and wealth?

Imperialism isn’t inevitable if you have a strong government and strong economic stability. We should strive for power and wealth but the legal way. Why do I say this? Well because in history there have been many countries that have wanted to strive for power and wealth illegally. For example Great Britain they tried to imperialize Africa but for the raw materials so they can continue industrialization. They went to Africa and just took over the land like if it was theirs.

Part 1: 1&3

1. How did the Industrial Revolution and the rise of Capitalism spark interest in Africa and the imperialism of the 19th and 20th century?
There where man reason why the Industrial Revolution and the rise of Capitalism sparked imperialism in Africa. The Industrial Revolution was a time period which started in Great Britain during the 1700’s. The Industrial revolution was the rise of new machinery and the use of iron and coal. Which were Great Britain’s natural resources. In need of expanding corporations and need of new resources they decided to move to the near by country of Africa which had many various natural resources. The idea of capitalism was one of the causes for imperialism in Africa. Capitalism was when the Business and Factory owners control the economy and trade. The interest in Africa was because of its ideas of being able to control a lot of land and becoming powerful for controlling a lot of lands. The natural resources from Africa would be taken to Great Britain and manufactured for new goods to be traded.

3. Compare and Contrast the colonization of the Age of Exploration (15th and 16th century) with the imperialism of the 19th and 20th century.
The Age of Exploration was a time period in which many explores set out to find and seek new land. This caused cultural diffusion and trade to increase. Many ideas of cultures were spread along the way. Many countries in South America were imperialized by Great Britain, Spain and Portugal. Imperialism in Africa was when European Countries decided to go to Africa to expand corporations and take Africa’s natural resources like gold and silver. They had many similarities because during each time countries were imperialized by mother countries. They were controlled and spread of the mother countries culture was also increasing. One difference was that during the age of exploration the colonies fought for there freedom and in Africa they had on going conflict because of the assimilation towards Africans and the take of their natural resources.

On the picture above it shows how these countries fought for africa ( Scramble for Africa)

What role do you think the imperialism of the 19th century and 20th century played in sparking the civil war in Sierra Leone?

I think that imperialism played a weak role during the civil war in Sierra Leone. Why? Because before all of this happened there were many countries fighting for Africa. They accomplished what they wanted and Africa was distributed between 14 countries. Some of those countries were Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany Italy and Holland. But the question is where they were when Africa needed them. They only wanted the raw material and after they got them they left and forgot about them.
